Baumbach, Daniel

Daniel Baumbach (*1991, Berlin) discovered his love for numismatics during his studies. While studying history and art history at Greifswald he came across the subject of baroque medals – to this day, this is one of his major areas of interest.

After graduating with a thesis on the representative medals of “The Great Elector” of Brandenburg, he started a master’s degree in Collections-Based History of Knowledge and Culture at the University of Erfurt. He graduated in 2019 with a thesis on the satirical medals of the Gotha baroque engraver Christian Wermuth.

During this time, he also worked at the ducal coin cabinet at Friedenstein Castle in Gotha for four years. While working with the objects of the cabinet’s collections, he got to know and love the entire spectrum of numismatics. At the beginning of his time in Gotha, he was involved in a complete review of the numismatic collection of ca. 150,000 pieces. Afterwards, he took great joy in identifying and inventorying the early modern gold coins and medals brought back from Coburg in 2011 where they were stored since World War 2.

Since November 2019, Daniel Baumbach has been a member of our team at CoinsWeekly. Moreover, he assists Ursula Kampmann with numerous projects and is responsible for Bookophile.

One of his first tasks is the curation of the exhibition “Wir und das Fremde: Wie wir die Welt kennenlernten” (We and the foreign: How we got to know the world), which will open on 23 January 2020 at the MoneyMuseum in Zurich.
