Coin dealer, ancient historian, journalist and sworn expert

Florian Haymann (*1978) started to collect coins at the age of nine. However, it took a while until he turned this passion into a career. After graduating from school, he first completed a traineeship at the publishing house Delius Klasing Verlag from 2000 to 2002 and then worked as a magazine editor in Munich.

Between 2003 and 2008, he studied German and history to become a teacher. Afterwards, from 2010 to 2012, he worked as a lecturer at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg where he took care of the coin collection of the Department of Ancient History. During the following years he did research on the coinage of the Roman Republic at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden from 2012 to 2014. In 2014, he obtained his doctorate in ancient history with a dissertation bearing the title “Untersuchungen zur Geschichte und Identitätskonstruktion von Aigeai im römischen Kilikien” [Studies on the History and Identity Construction of Aegeae in Roman Cilicia]. Since 2014, he has been focusing on the coin trade and since 2016 he has been responsible for the division of Ancient Numismatics at Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. in Frankfurt. Florian Haymann has been working as a sworn expert for ancient coins since 2022.

Haymann used his journalistic interest in order to make numismatic topics accessible to a broad public, while doing so he focused mainly on the cultural and historical aspects of coins. His articles are regularly published in specialist journals, and his “Einführung in die griechische und römische Numismatik” [Introduction to Greek and Roman Numismatics] published in 2016 aims to reach a wide audience and, by now, it has also entered university libraries in Germany. On 24 February 2020, the anthology “Runde Geschichte. Europa in 99 Münz-Episoden” [Round History. Europe in 99 Coin Issues] will be published Haymann being a co-editor. Additionally, he occasionally publishes literary contributions to several magazines, for example to the satirical magazine Titanic.

Haymann is part of the advisory boards of the Liebstein-Gesellschaft and of OzeAN, an online journal for ancient numismatics.
