Michael Matzke (* 1966, died 20 May 2020) studied Medieval History, History of Art, Empirical Cultural Sciences, and Historical Auxiliary Sciences at the universities of Tübingen and Pisa. From 1991 to 1995, he was Research Assistant at the Institute for Regional History and Historical Auxiliary Sciences, at the Research Center for Islamic Numismatics, and at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Tübingen. In 1995, he earned his doctor’s degree in Medieval History with the thesis on ‘Daibert of Pisa – Bishop, Archbishop, Patriarch’.
At the Institute for Regional History, Michael Matzke was Research Assistant for the project ‘Mittelalterliche Münzprägung in Bergbauregionen’ funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, from 1996 to 1999. Until 2000, he was Research Associate at the Fitzwilliam Museum / Cambridge University for the ‘Medieval European Coinage’ project (Volume 12, Northern Italy). He held a lectureship at the Classics Faculty of Cambridge University in 1999-2001. In 2000/2001, he served as Assistant Keeper at the Fitzwilliam Museum, responsible for the coins of classical antiquity and the coins of medieval Europe.
Michael Matzke was Assistant Professor for Medieval History and Historical Auxiliary Sciences at the University of Marburg (2001-2006). From 2008 to 2017, he held lectures at the University of Freiburg.

From 2006 to 2020, Michael Matzke was Curator at the Coin Cabinet of the Basel Historical Museum; since 2015, he was Research Associate at the Swiss Inventory of Coin Finds (SICF), Bern.

Michael Matzke authored a large number of academic articles and conference papers as well as seven books (as of 2017). His contribution ‘Vom Ottolinus zum Grossus – Münzprägung in der Toskana vom 10. bis zum 13. Jahrhundert’ (translates as ‘From the ottolinus to the grossus – coin minting in 10th to 13th century Tuscany’ (Schweizerische Numismatische Rundschau 72, 1993) was awarded the prize of the Pfälzische Numismatische Gesellschaft e.V. in 1994. Together with Dietrich Mannsperger, he wrote the SNG volume on the collection of the University of Tübingen (Volume 6: ‘Phrygien – Kappadokien. Römische Provinzprägungen in Kleinasien’, 1998). He is co-author of ‘Dirham und Rappenpfennig 2: Mittelalterliche Münzprägung in Südwestdeutschland’ (2004) and of the 10th volume of the ‘Inventar der Fundmünzen der Schweiz’ series, dealing with the coin finds of Ticino (2012).

Michael Matzke was a member of various societies, including the Schweizerische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Fundmünzen (SAF), the Swiss Numismatic Society, the Gruppo Interuniversitario per la Storia dell’Europa Mediterranea, the Società Storica Pisana, the Gesellschaft für Internationale Geldgeschichte, the Royal Numismatic Society, and the Alemannisches Institute Freiburg / Breisgau.

In 2017 he received the “Ehrenpreis der Gesellschaft für internationale Geldgeschichte” in Frankfurt, and in 2018 the honorary award of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris.
