Gibbs, William T.
Managing editor of “Coin World”
William T. Gibbs (* 1954) is the managing editor of “Coin World”, appointed to that position on May 1, 2015, after serving as news editor for many years. He joined the “Coin World” editorial staff in 1976 as an assistant editor for “Collectors’ Clearinghouse.” He was a longtime collector and “Coin World” subscriber at the time and had recently graduated from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a degree in journalism.
While still working in the Clearinghouse department, he began cataloging relic tokens and medals, which appeared as a multi-part series in “Coin World” in the late 1970s. It was at this time that he developed an interest in medals, tokens, and badges of Adm. George Dewey and began to build a significant collection.
Within a few years of joining “Coin World”, William T. Gibbs moved from the Clearinghouse department to the news desk. He has covered news events throughout the United States, as well as numismatic events in Canada and Belgium. He later became assistant news editor and then news editor.
Today, as the top editor of “Coin World”, William T. Gibbs manages the editorial staff and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the print and online editorial content of “Coin World”. He serves as chief copy editor for all “Coin World” publications and directs editorial production aspects of “Coin World”.
He has edited numerous books for “Coin World”, including multiple volumes of the “Coin World Almanac” and serving as copy editor for David L. Vagi’s “Coinage and History of the Roman Empire” (1999).
He has received multiple awards for writing and editing, for instance for his July 2000 article, “Better coins through science,” explaining the conservation efforts used in curating the treasure recovered from the “SS Central America”; that article received a Numismatic Literary Guild award and also won recognition in competition with journalists from a wide range of fields. He was named the 2015 recipient of the Numismatic Literary Guild’s top honor, the Clemy Award.
