CIT’s new Smartminting® 4.0: Iron Knight
Nothing has revolutionized modern commemorative coinage more than smartminting®. This technology enabled modern minting presses for the first time to create a relief that goes even beyond what 19th-century knuckle-joint presses could achieve.

With Iron Knight, CIT has taken the ultra-high relief that had previously been possible to the next level: thanks to smartminting® 4.0, an unprecedented relief of 9 mm can now be achieved. This is 50% more than what was possible with the prior version of smartminting® 2.0. The coin was minted by B. H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt in Munich.
Description of the Coin
One side depicts a knight in full armor from the front with sword, shield and morning star. In the background an imposing castle with many towers. The knight seems to step out of the image, the tip of his boot standing on the lower rim of the coin, the top of his helmet peeking over the upper rim. On the rim at the bottom IRON KNIGHT, a dragon between the words.
Against the backdrop of a geometric pattern, the other side depicts the portrait of Charles III by Dan Thorne (initials: DT) with the circumscription 25 DOLLARS CHARLES III 2024 COOK ISLANDS.
Background
CIT’s first smartminting® issues sparked a boom. Mints around the world are trying their best to create commemorative coins with higher relief. But there is one thing no one but B. H. Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt in Munich has been able to do: produce ultra-high surfaces in Proof quality. This makes Iron Knight a new milestone in minting technology – with an unprecedented relief in Proof quality.
If you carefully study the field of contemporary coinage, you will come to the result that the introduction of smartminting® marked a paradigm shift. Flat coins became three-dimensional works of art. Iron Knight takes this development even further.
If you want to experience all three dimensions of this coin, you have to watch the corresponding film:
