Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name “Swiss special coins”. The Switzerland special coin commemorates the proclamation of Switzerland as a federal state on 12 September 1848 and celebrates Switzerland’s unofficial birthday. The coin highlights the history of Switzerland and recalls the modern Swiss Federal Constitution, which came into force in 1848. The coin issue honours this event and is intended to show the importance of the federal structure, which is crucial for Switzerland’s innovative strength, dialogue and national cohesion.

The Special Coins Bring Our Country’s History and Memories to Life

The 20g “Switzerland” silver special coin features typically Swiss motifs on the obverse and reflects the history and culture of our country. “With this coin, we want to offer every Swiss citizen and all visitors a souvenir of Switzerland,” explains Jan Niklas Betz, Deputy General Manager and Head of Marketing/Sales at Swissmint. The reverse bears all the cantonal coats of arms, with Switzerland in the centre. This special coin has a face value of CHF 20 and will be available for purchase from 12 September. 7,500 coins in uncirculated quality, 4,800 coins in proof quality and an additional 200 coins with an artist’s certificate will be issued.

Each Special Coin Is a Miniature Work of Art

The Federal Mint Swissmint produces Swiss franc coins on behalf of the Swiss Confederation. These have been created in the heart of Switzerland since 1855, and in the popular Kirchenfeld district of Bern since 1906. Since 1936, Swissmint has also minted special coins to commemorate important historical and cultural events and to honour prominent figures. Each of these special coins is a miniature work of art in a unique tradition of artistry and craftsmanship.
