Italy
Italy will commemorate the final year of the world tour of the renowned training ship Amerigo Vespucci with a €2 coin in 2025. This journey, which began in 2023 and concludes in 2025, has taken the iconic vessel to ports around the globe, representing Italian maritime heritage and culture. The coin’s design features the magnificent ship under full sail, celebrating Italy’s naval traditions and its message of international collaboration. A second €2 coin from Italy will be dedicated to the Holy Year (referred to as “Iubilaeum” on the coin). The total mintage for both coins will be three million pieces.
Luxembourg
Luxembourg’s two planned €2 commemorative coins for 2025 highlight pivotal moments in national and European history. The first coin marks the 25th anniversary of Grand Duke Henri’s accession to the throne, coinciding with his abdication in October 2025 in favour of his son, Guillaume. According to the Banque Centrale du Luxembourg, the new Grand Duke’s portrait will appear on Luxembourg’s circulating coins starting in 2026.
The second coin honours the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which laid the groundwork for the European Union. This design pays tribute to Luxembourg-born Robert Schuman’s landmark speech that ushered in a new era of European cooperation.
As in previous years, Luxembourg’s €2 commemorative coins will be available in a variety of formats. These include a proof-quality set and two versions of a brilliant uncirculated set, as well as a proof set covering 2024 and 2025. Additionally, Luxembourg will issue two distinct Coincard versions for the first time in 2025: one in BU and one in BU with a colour application, each limited to 5,000 pieces.
Finland
Finland’s 2025 €2 coins will be the first issued under the new “Helsinki Mint” brand by the Royal Dutch Mint. The first coin, due in May, will celebrate Finland’s state visits and underline the importance of diplomacy and foreign relations.
The second coin, released in autumn, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the prestigious Finland-Sweden athletics match, one of the world’s oldest national competitions.
Collectors should note that, similar to the Netherlands and Belgium (whose coin sets are also produced by the Royal Dutch Mint), Finland will introduce a World Money Fair Set themed around the “Big 5” animals.
Greece
Greece is planning two €2 commemorative coins for 2025 that honour the country’s major musical icons. The first coin marks the 100th anniversary of Mikis Theodorakis’s birth, celebrating his globally significant works and their deep connections to Greece’s cultural and political struggles. The second coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of Manos Hadjidakis’s birth, a composer who revolutionised Greek music with his unique style and achieved international acclaim. Both coins highlight Greece’s cultural influence while reflecting values of freedom, creativity, and identity. The mintage for each coin will be limited to 750,000 pieces. To the delight of most Euro collectors, Greece is moving away from producing three different versions of the Coincards. Instead, a total of 5,000 Coincards will be made for each coin.
Portugal
Portugal is set to issue two €2 commemorative coins in 2025, addressing global themes with special national significance. The first coin, themed “Sustainable Development,” emphasises Portugal’s dedication to environmental protection, climate action, and fostering a sustainable society. Its design symbolises the balance between nature, economy, and society.
The second coin celebrates the 16th World Scout Jamboree, which will be hosted in Portugal in 2025. This global event brings together Scouts from around the world to promote community, a love for nature, and international cooperation. The coin features traditional Scouting symbols and underscores the movement’s role in fostering global friendship and peace. Both coins will have a mintage of 515,000 pieces.
Lithuania
Lithuania’s plans for 2025 include two €2 commemorative coins focusing on themes of national importance. The first coin, “For Defence,” honours the nation’s contributions to both domestic and international security by symbolising Lithuania’s armed forces and the importance of peace and freedom. The second coin, “Mažajai Lietuvai” (Minor Lithuania), celebrates the historical and cultural identity of the Minor Lithuania region, recognising its vital role in Lithuanian history and the preservation of the Lithuanian language.
Lithuania also has two coins planned for 2026. One will highlight the country’s strides in energy independence and the use of sustainable energy sources. The other will honour Kaunas, a city renowned for its cultural and historical significance in Lithuania.
Slovakia
Slovakia’s €2 commemorative coin for 2026 will be dedicated to the city of Trenčín, which will hold the title of European Capital of Culture that year. The design will emphasise Trenčín’s historical and cultural importance, featuring the iconic Trenčín Castle, one of Slovakia’s most famous landmarks, along with artistic elements. This coin will celebrate the city’s rich history and its prominent role as a cultural centre in Europe for the upcoming year.
