2-Euro-Ticker: New 2-Euro Coins in November

By Sebastian Wieschowski

The final stretch in the 2-euro world: Two countries issued new commemorative coins in November – one of which is unlikely ever to be seen in daily circulation and, quite obviously, in most 2-euro collections either.

Latvia: Puzuris

On 21 November 2024, Latvia issued a 2-euro commemorative coin featuring the motif “Puzuris.” The Puzuris, a traditional Latvian Christmas ornament, symbolises harmony and the pursuit of balance. The mintage is 413,000 coins in brilliant uncirculated quality, with 400,000 coins released in rolls and 7,000 coins available in a coincard.

Just 7,000 pieces: The coin marking Cyprus’s 20th anniversary of EU membership will go down in history as one of the top rarities among 2-euro coins – and as a coin with significant controversy. Photo: Central Bank of Cyprus.

Cyprus: 20th Anniversary of Cyprus’s Accession to the European Union

On 27 November 2024, Cyprus released its new 2-euro coin. It commemorates the 20th anniversary of the country’s accession to the EU in 2004, a milestone in Cyprus’s European history. The mintage consists of only 7,000 coins in proof quality – with none available in rolls. This release policy has sparked major criticism among collectors, as did issues with sales on the Central Bank of Cyprus’s website.

Looking Ahead

In the final month of the year, 2-euro collectors can look forward to a small festive treat: Croatia will honour the writer Marko Marulić, the “father of Croatian literature,” with a 2-euro commemorative coin available from 2 December 2024. The mintage is 195,000 coins in brilliant uncirculated quality and 5,000 coins in proof quality.

On 9 December 2024, Andorra will release a 2-euro coin celebrating the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships 2024, held in Andorra. This sporty edition will have a mintage of 60,000 coins in brilliant uncirculated quality. On the same day, Andorra will also issue another 2-euro coin marking the 100th anniversary of skiing in the country, with a mintage of 70,000 coins in brilliant uncirculated quality.

Slovenia will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the National and University Library in Ljubljana in December 2024 with a 2-euro coin. The mintage comprises 996,250 coins in brilliant uncirculated quality and 3,750 coins in proof quality.

The Vatican also plans to issue a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2024, celebrating the 150th birthday of Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of wireless telegraphy. The mintage totals 67,000 coins in brilliant uncirculated quality and 9,900 coins in proof quality.
