2-Euro Ticker: New Releases in May 2025

As Luxembourg prepares for a transition on the throne this fall, the Bavarian State Mint in Munich has its own reason to celebrate: for the first time, the German mint is producing Luxembourg’s proof-quality 2-euro coins for the official coin set. This marks the first occasion since the euro’s introduction that a German mintmark appears on a non-German 2-euro coin. The “D” mintmark for Munich can be clearly seen on the right edge of the inner core of the coin.

In 2024, Luxembourg’s proof coins were still being produced by the Royal Dutch Mint. In 2023, the contract went to the Mincovňa Kremnica in Slovakia, and prior to that, to the Monnaie de Paris. With a mintage of just 1,000 pieces, the 2025 issue joins an exclusive circle – it ranks among the rarest 2-euro coins ever made. Only the Croatian proof 2-euro coin, limited to 500 pieces, has been issued in lower numbers. Luxembourg’s proof coins are consistently among the top rarities – and in a remarkable twist, the coins commemorating both the 25th anniversary of Grand Duke Henri’s accession and his abdication in 2025 are being minted in Germany.

Luxembourg: 25th Anniversary of Grand Duke Henri’s Accession to the Throne and 75th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration
Collectors will need a bit more patience before the proof-quality 2-euro coins from the Munich mint are delivered. To mark the silver jubilee of Grand Duke Henri’s accession to the throne, Luxembourg first released the standard version of its commemorative 2-euro coin. The coin commemorates his assumption of office in the year 2000 and honors his role as head of state. It was issued on May 5, 2025, with a total mintage of 132,500 coins in Brilliant Uncirculated quality, including 120,000 pieces distributed in rolls.
With another 2-euro coin, Luxembourg pays tribute to the groundbreaking Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950, considered the foundation of the European Union. The coin honors Robert Schuman as one of the key architects of European integration. This issue was also released on May 5, 2025.

Italy: Around the World with the Training Ship Amerigo Vespucci (2023–2025)
Italy has issued a 2-euro commemorative coin honoring the global voyage of the famed training ship Amerigo Vespucci, which visited ports around the world between 2023 and 2025. The coin highlights the vessel’s role as a symbol of Italy’s maritime heritage. It was released on May 9, 2025, with a total mintage of 2,987,500 coins in Brilliant Uncirculated quality and 12,500 coins in Proof.
Finland: State Visits – Diplomacy and Foreign Policy
This 2-euro coin from Finland honors the importance of state visits in shaping the country’s foreign policy and international relations. It was released on May 13, 2025, with 200,000 coins minted in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and 4,000 in Proof quality.

Malta: The Maltese Ox and the Fortress City of Mdina
Malta released a 2-euro commemorative coin celebrating the Maltese ox, a symbol of the island’s agricultural traditions and cultural heritage. The coin was issued on May 15, 2025, with a mintage of 140,000 in Brilliant Uncirculated quality; no Proof version was issued.
On the same day, Malta also launched a 2-euro coin in honor of the historic city of Mdina, known for its centuries-old history and distinctive architecture. This edition was struck in a quantity of 147,000 coins in Brilliant Uncirculated quality. Like the ox coin, no Proof version was produced. Both coins are available loose or in coincards.
Official Confirmation: Monaco to Issue New 2-Euro Commemorative Coin in June 2025
The Monégasque Stamp and Coin Museum has officially announced the release of a new 2-euro commemorative coin scheduled for Monday, 16 June 2025. The coin will be struck in the highest quality “Proof” finish (Belle Épreuve) and will be dedicated to the Comté de Carladès, a historical fiefdom of the Grimaldi princely family. As in previous years, the mintage is strictly limited to just 15,000 pieces. Sales will take place exclusively online via the museum’s official website.
Each registered customer is allowed to purchase only one collector’s case. To prevent technical issues, special characters must be removed from customer data. Any attempt to manipulate the order quantity will result in immediate cancellation of all associated orders and may be penalised with fees of €35 (for orders within France) or €40 (for other European countries). On-site sales or advance reservations are not available.
The previous year’s issue, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Treaty of Burgos with Charles V, sold out in a matter of hours. More than 28,000 collectors joined the virtual queue, although only half of the coins were allocated to private customers – the rest went to dealers. On the secondary market, prices quickly climbed into the mid-triple-digit range.
Virtual Queue: The Patience Game Starts at 10:00 a.m. Sharp
On release day, the online shop of the Monnaie de Monaco (MTM) will open around 9:00 a.m. with a preliminary information page. Starting at exactly 10:00 a.m., users will automatically be redirected to a digital waiting system called “Queue Fair.” This system assigns each visitor a random queue number, regardless of when the shop was accessed. The ensuing countdown may stretch over several hours depending on server load, and technical errors are frequently reported during this phase. If users receive messages like “Vente terminée” (“Sale ended”), it is often worth refreshing the page, as access may still be granted in some cases.
Registration, Cart, and Payment Issues: A Test of Nerves
After successfully entering the shop, users must log in with an existing account. Only then can they attempt to place the limited-edition coin in their shopping cart – a process that often requires multiple attempts due to system overloads. Payment can also be interrupted or delayed. The collector edition is priced well above face value – most recently around €165 including shipping. Since the shop’s payment functions are not always stable, patience is essential. Some collectors report better experiences using the Mozilla browser and credit cards from specific banks.
Confirmation, Identity Checks, and Shipping: What Happens After Ordering
Once the order has been successfully placed, customers typically receive an email confirmation shortly thereafter – checking the spam folder is recommended. In some cases, the vendor may request additional identity verification, such as a photo ID, to prevent multiple purchases. Delivery takes place approximately three weeks after ordering via Chronopost. Tracking information and a delivery schedule are sent in advance by email and SMS. The 2025 collector coin will be issued in two different versions – collectors aiming to secure both should keep an eye on the second release scheduled for autumn.
