Ariza Armada, Almudena
Almudena Ariza Armada (*1966) holds a BA and MA in Medieval History, postgraduate studies in Numismatics, and her PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the Complutense University of Madrid. Since January 2000, she has taught semester courses (Undergraduate and Master), delivered lectures, and led academic trips (Spain and Morocco) at several American University Programs of Study Abroad. Currently teaching at Stanford University, New York University, and the University of San Diego. She is also a collaborating professor at Comillas Pontifical University since 2016. At these universities, she teaches courses on al-Andalus, Spain and Islam, Contemporary Islam, Sepharad, and the Cultural History of Spain. She is accredited in Spain by ANECA.
She has participated in several research projects and has received numerous grants and scholarships from Spanish (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, the Complutense University of Madrid), European (European Community), and American (New York University, Stanford University) institutions, as well as several awards, both for research (Extraordinary Doctorate Award of the Complutense University of Madrid and Javier Conde Garriga Award of the Spanish Numismatic Association) and teaching (Award of Center for Humanities of New York University and Terman Award Advisor of Stanford University).
She is a member of Editorial Boards, Scientific and Advisory Committees, and evaluator of numerous Academic Journals of Numismatics, Archaeology, and Arab and Islamic Studies of several countries. She has been a member of Ph. D. Thesis Tribunals (Spain) and an evaluator in Scholarship Committees (Poland). She has also been co-director of Master’s and Ph.D. thesis (Egypt).
Her research activity is focused on Islamic Numismatics, a subject on which he has published numerous works: papers, book chapters, and books. The last one, From Barcelona to Oran. Las emisiones monetales a nombre de los califas Ḥammūdíes de al-Andalus, won the prize of the Spanish Numismatic Association. She has also participated in numerous national and international Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, and Symposia, the latest being the International Conference on Islamic Numismatic (Saudi Arabia Ministry of Culture, Riyadh 2023).
She has professional experience as an expert advisor in Islamic numismatics and is a member of numerous Scientific and Professional Associations, both in Spain and the United States.
