Dive Into Numismatics with the Money & Medals Network’s Coin Talks

Coin Talk is a regular online talk hosted by the Money & Medals Network, presenting different element of numismatics from the basics to the more advanced. Each session will delve into a distinctive facet of numismatics, ranging from fundamental principles to advanced topics. Expect engaging talks lasting 30-40 minutes, with a dedicated Q&A session at the conclusion, allowing our audience to participate actively.

The theme for the upcoming session is an “Introduction to Roman Coin” by Dr Andrew Brown, the National Finds Adviser for Iron Age and Roman Coins (PAS, British Museum). The Talk will be hosted online at 12:30 GMT on 25 February 2025.

This session will provide an overview of the development of Roman coins, from their early origins to the diverse types used across the empire. Dr. Brown will discuss key denominations, their historical significance, and how they evolved over time. He will also highlight essential resources and books for anyone interested in identifying and studying these coins.

Whether you’re a beginner or an enthusiast, this talk is a great opportunity to gain insights into Roman numismatics from an expert in the field. These talks are recorded, forming a valuable resource for MMN members keen on expanding their knowledge of various numismatic subjects.

December Coin Talk

The December Coin Talk with Gregory Thompson, titled “An Introduction to Studying and Identifying Ancient Greek Coins,” is now available on YouTube.

This talk explores the distinctive characteristics of Greek coinage, including the absence of dates, unique portrait styles, and the evolution of artistry from the Archaic to the Hellenistic periods.
