2-Euro Ticker: New 2-Euro Coins in July 2024

by Sebastian Wieschowski

Summertime is not only a time for holidays and travel, it is also a great time to enlarge your 2-euro collection – especially if there is a 2-euro coin issuing office near your holiday destination, or if you get the chance to sift through small change to find some pieces. Three new motifs were released in July 2024.

Croatia The Old Town of Varaždin

Croatia released a new 2-euro commemorative coin to honour The Old Town of Varaždin. This historical town is an important landmark. The coin was issued on 2 July 2024. 195,000 specimens were released in coin cards, 50,000 specimens in coin rolls and 5,000 Proof specimens were produced. Initial feedback from the collecting community on the quality of the coins has been overwhelmingly positive. The Croatian Mint appears to have kept its word – it had addressed quality issues regarding its first 2-euro commemorative coins in 2023 in a CoinsWeekly interview and had promised to make improvements.

Vatican: 750th Anniversary of the Death of Saint Thomas Aquinas

The Vatican has released a new 2-euro commemorative coin for the 750th anniversary of the death of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The latter was an influential theologian and philosopher of the Middle Ages. The coin was released on 3 July 2024 and had a mintage figure of 67,000 specimens in blister packs, as well as 9,900 Proof specimens. Mintage figures for blister packs have been decreasing for years.

Portugal: Portugal’s Participation in the 33rd Olympic Games

Portugal has issued a new 2-euro commemorative coin celebrating Portugal’s participation in the 33rd Olympic Games. The coin honours the country’s athletic efforts and achievements. The coin was issued on 4 July 2024 with a mintage figure of 456,075 specimens in rolls, as well as 10,000 Proof specimens with colour application. As with previous Proof issues from France and Monaco, there was discontent about this variety as the Portuguese mint seems to have confirmed numerous orders first, and cancelled them later.

Outlook

In August, 2-euro collectors can look forward to a short breather, as no 2-euro issues are planned for the month. September will see the release of the second 2-euro commemorative coin from San Marino for the 330th anniversary of the death of Ghirlandaio, an Italian renaissance painter. Moreover, Slovakia will issue a new 2-euro commemorative coin honouring 100 years of the international marathon in Košice. This marathon is one of the oldest and most important of such events in Europe. The coin will be released in September 2024 – the mintage figure has not been announced yet.

Slovakia was in the headlines for another reason in July: the motif for the country’s 2025 2-euro coin was chosen – and the coin for the 100 year anniversary of the first international sports tournament in Slovakia, the European Ice Hockey Championship, is likely to delight collectors across Europe.

Meanwhile, the designs for San Marino’s 2025 2-euro coins have been announced – they will be dedicated to the topics “The Holy Year 2025 – Pilgrims of Hope” and “550th Anniversary of the Birth of Michelangelo”.
