Locher, Gaëtan

Gaëtan Locher is a historian specializing in ancient history, archaeology, and numismatics. He has worked for Numismatica Genevensis SA since February 2025.

Academic career

Gaëtan Locher studied Ancient History at the Section d’Archéologie et des Sciences de l’Antiquité (ASA) of the University of Lausanne with a specialization in Historical Heritage Professions. As an avid collector of Greek coins with a preference for the coinage of the Seleucids and the cities of Magna Graecia, he soon focused on numismatics. His master’s thesis was titled Apparition et diffusion du monnayage grec dans le Bruttium entre le VIe et le Ve siècle av. J.-C. He defended his dissertation in January 2025. It deals with the main reasons for and changes in the early coinage of the various mints in Bruttium. For his work, he received the Prix de la Fondation Romande de Numismatique in 2025.

Scientific interests

Gaëtan Locher has already published several articles, most of them in the Bulletin des Sciences de l’Antiquité de l’Université des Lausanne – Chronozones. Besides Bruttium, his particular interest lies in Seleucid coinage.

In addition to his studies, he supported the Fondation Romande de Numismatique in building a database on numismatics.

He is a member of the Société Genevoise de Numismatique and the Swiss Numismatic Society.

Professional activities

Since February 2025, Gaëtan Locher has been working as numismatist for Numismatica Genevensis SA.
