Numismatist and Curator

Simone Vogt (*1971) is an archaeologist and numismatist, since 2007 she has been the curator in charge of the collection of coins and medals at the August Kestner Museum in Hannover.

Simone Vogt studied Classical Archaeology, Ancient History and Romance studies in Cologne, Bonn and Bologna and obtained her PhD in 2001 at the University of Cologne with a dissertation on Roman Ideal Sculpture in northern Italy. After long research stays in Italy, she completed a traineeship at the collection of antiques of the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel at Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. While working on ancient coins in Kassel, she developed her fascination for numismatics.

Since 2007 Simone Vogt has been working as curator at the August Kestner Museum in Hannover, where she is responsible for the museum’s numismatic collection of more than 100,000 objects. The museum’s coin collection is the largest one in northern Germany and covers the entire history of coinage from its beginnings to modern times. At the Kestner Museum, she attaches particular importance to the integration and consideration of monetary history within the museum’s exhibitions on cultural history. She also curated numerous numismatic exhibitions.

In her publications and lectures, she focuses on the history of the museum’s collection being one of very few numismatists who dedicate themselves to the provenance research of this collection and its history during the Third Reich.
