Naville Numismatics presents its Live Auction 92. The auction will close on Sunday 13th October 2024, 16.00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin.

The auction features a selection of 791 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

The first section of the sale starts with a small selection of staters of the Vindelici, a rare selection of cast bronzes of Central Italy, a nice didrachm of Velia, a rare tetradrachm of Messana, a rare 10 litrae of Syracuse, a nice tetradrachm of Mende, a rare triobol of Phocis (from the BCD collection), a well preserved tetradrachm of Attalos I (Privately purchased from Sternberg in 2005. From the Ernst Langlotz (1895-1978) and a British collection) and a nice hecte of Phocaea.

Moreover in this part, a nice selection of Athens, an interesting group of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Tarentum, Metapontum, Caulonia, Athens, Leucas, Aegina, Seleucid kings, Judaea, Phoenicia, Arabia and Egypt.

Noteworthy in this section are a very rare tetradrachm of Syracuse unsigned but attributed to Eukleidas (Ex Seaby coins and Medal Bulletin January 1976, A4), an extremely well preserved 1/5 shekel of Carthage (From the dr. Hugh Shire collection), a well preserved stater of Teos and a nice dishekel of Sidon (Ex NAC sale F, 1996, 1294)

The Roman Provincial part of the sale includes rare and interesting specimens and a wonderful selection of rare coins of Alexandria, most of them from the Dattari collection.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii.

This includes an interesting selection of cast bronzes such as a well preserved sextans (from a Swiss collection), a very nice triens (from a Swiss collection) and moreover a well preserved didrachm (corn-ear first series), a nice denarius of P. Maenius M.f. Antias or Antiaticus, a nice denarius serratus of Q. Antonius Balbus, a scarce denarius of Cn. Pompeius Magnus and M. Poblicius and a rare denarius of Marcus Antonius.

Lot 456: Octavian as Augustus, 27 BC – 14 AD. Denarius, Colonia Patricia (?), circa 19 BC, AR 18.50 mm., 3.69 g. Lovely old cabinet tone with iridescent reflex and Extremely Fine. Ex NAC sale 84, 2015, 876 and Naville sale 27, 2016, 456. Starting price: £350.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman gold, bronzes and silver coins such as a rare sestertius in name of Agrippina (from the Apostolo Zeno collection), a nice tetradrachm of Claudius, a nice sestertius of Nero, a very rare sestertius of Vespasian (Ex Busso Peus sale 420, 2017, 253. Privately purchased from Button, Frankfurt, in January 1957), a nice selection of sestertii of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, a rare sestertius of Geta, an apparently unique and unpublished antoninianus of Tacitus, an aureus of Maximianus Herculius (from the Mentor collection) and a well struck solidus of Honorius, even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles.

Very remarkable in this part are a rare aureus of Claudius with the Pax on reverse and a well preserved solidus of Arcadius for Thessalonica.

Lot 772: Byzantine. Heraclius, 5 October 610 – 11 January 641, with colleagues from January 613. Solidus, Jerusalem (?) uncertain Eastern mint, circa 613-618, AV 21.00 mm., 4.38 g. Rare. FDC. NGC graded Mint state, Strike 3/5, Surface 4/5, certificate 4165540-010. Starting price: £300.

The Byzantine part includes a very interesting selection of rare specimens such a rare solidus of Heraclius for Jerusalem, a nice solidus of Constans II (Ex NAC sale 75, 2013, 598), nevertheless the Medieval and Modern part of sale includes a very rare Tarì of Frederik I for Amalfi.
