Auctions 103 and 104 of Leipziger Münzhandlung und Auktion Heidrun Höhn

The upcoming major spring auction of the Leipzig auction house offers a fascinating selection of numismatic pieces for numismatists and lovers of historical coins and medals.

Numismatists and lovers of historical coins and medals can expect a broad spectrum of numismatic offers of 4400 lots in 2 auction catalogues. For 5 days, you will have the opportunity to bid on wonderful collectibles. The highlight of the spring auction are two large collections. On the one hand, there is an extensive collection of coins from Brandenburg – Prussia, Brunswick and Saxony, and, on the other hand, what is probably the largest collection of the Saxon King Augustus the Strong offered to date. Auction 104, focussing entirely on Saxon numismatics, promises a magnificent selection of over 1000 lots. These include the collection of an aesthete and a collection dedicated to the famous “Augustus the Strong”.

Lot 2707: Nuremberg. Broad double taler, n.d. (1711). Mint master G.F. Nürnberger and G. Hautsch. Showpiece of the highest rarity. Probably the most magnificent specimen known in the coin trade. Splendid patina, about FDC. Estimate: 15,000 euros.

The auction will begin on Tuesday 16 April 2024. It will include a broad spectrum of banknotes from the period of inflation to GDR history and foreign currencies. This is followed by 130 lots of orders and decorations, accompanied by an extensive range of over 600 themed medals and plaques. This diversity promises a rich offer for collectors and interested parties, with a particular focus on shooting medals, the Third Reich, aviation and Karl Goetz. This will be followed by a series of ancient coins with a focus on Byzantine gold.

Lot 7682: Brandenburg-Prussia. Frederick II the Great, 1740-1786. Piaster n.d. (minted between December 1751 and February 1752) ICM-Aurich. Extremely rare, magnificent and historically interesting specimen. Extremely fine to FDC. Estimate: 10,000 euros.

On Wednesday, 17 April, the auction will begin with 450 international coins and medals, including a beautiful series of Habsburg-Austrian coins. Particularly noteworthy is the series from Italy with numerous rarities. From Thursday 18 April, coins and medals from German territories will be presented, including an extensive collection that will offered in auction 103. The focus here is on coinage from Brandenburg-Prussia (300 lots) and Brunswick (150 lots). From pfennigs to multiple ducats, numerous rarities will be offered. Further interesting series can be found regarding Anhalt and Bavaria, with a 1863 Rhine gold ducat with a mintage figure of only 4 specimens.

Lot 3191: Saxony. Frederick Augustus III (1904-1918). 3 marks 1917 (E). Frederick the Wise – 400th anniversary of the Reformation. Only 100 specimens minted. One of the great rarities of German numismatics. Showpiece. Obverse min. touched, Proof. Estimate: 80,000 euros.

Unique coins from the German Empire and the Weimar Republic will then be offered for sale. Particularly noteworthy is the rarest German coin of the Empire: 3 Mark 1917 “Frederick the Wise”. But there are also some rarities in the area of the colonies. Interesting lots from all areas and literature complete auction 103 on Friday evening.

Lot 3730. Saxony Electoral branch starting in 1547 (Albertine branch). John George I and August (1611-1615). 6 ducats 1612, Schwan-Dresden. Commemorating the vicariate. Off-metal strike from the dies of the taler. Extremely rare and magnificent specimen. Obverse with tiny graffiti, extremely fine to mint state. Estimate: 40,000 euros.

On Saturday, 20 April 2024, over 1000 lots of Saxon numismatics will be offered for auction in a separate catalogue! Höhn customers can expect a broad spectrum of pieces, from fractional coins to multiple talers. These include the first Klappmützentaler, Schnee1; double, triple and quadruple talers. Numerous gold coins are also represented, ranging from 1/4 ducats to off-metal strikes in gold, ducats, double and multiple ducats and even 12-fold ducats. These representative gold pieces are highly rare and demonstrate the prosperity and economic importance of Saxony at the time!

In this year’s auctions, Höhn presents a collection of around 450 coins that has been assembled over decades. The first part of the collection contains over 200 lots and includes numismatic diversity from pfennigs to triple talers and numerous gold coins of the popular Saxon ruler, and the later King of Poland!
