Naville Numismatics presents its Live Auction 88. The sale will close on Sunday 7th April 2024, 16.00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin. Absentee bidders can bid electronically through Naville Numismatics website until the start of the live session. The auction features a selection of 620 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

Lot 131: Greek. The Ptolemies. Ptolemy I as satrap (323 –305/4 BC). Tetradrachm in the name of Alexander III, uncertain mint 3, c. 306 BC. Wonderful old cabinet tone. An insignificant metal flan on reverse, otherwise Good Extremely Fine. Starting Price: £750.

The first section of the sale starts with a well preserved Celtic tetradrachm, a nice nomos of Metapontum, a rare bronze of Gaulos, a nice stater of Neapolis, selections of drachms of Alexander III, a rare drachm of Larissa and a well preserved stater of Gortyna (Ex Glendining sale 13 December 1963, Foreign amateur, 285. From the collection of a Mentor. Moreover in this part, a selection of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Tarentum, Metapontum, Croton, Athens, Corinth, Seleucid kings, Judaea, Phoenicia, Arabia and Egypt.

Noteworthy in this section are a bronze of Aphilas of the highest rarity and probably the finest one known and a well preserved tetradrachm of Ptolemy I from the collection of a Mentor.

The Roman Provincial part of the sale includes a choice of specimens from the Dattari Collection and a wonderful selection of rare coins of Alexandria.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii. This includes a rare anonymous semis, a nice denarius of C. Varus, a rare denarius of C. Iulius Caesar, a very rare denarius of L. Mussidius Longus, a rare denarius of Sextus Pompeius and well struck legionary denarius of M. Antonius.

Lot 440: Roman Empire. Hadrian (117-138). Sestertius, Rome, c. 133-135. Excessively Rare; the work of the “Alphaeus master”. An extraordinary portrait work of an excellent master engraver. Brown tone, bold portrait, minor areas of corrosions and cuprite gently levelled out in parts, otherwise Good Very Fine. Starting Price: £5,000.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman gold, bronzes and silver coins such as a nice denarius of P. Petronius Turpilianus, a nice dupondius of Germanicus, a nice denarius of Nero, a well preserved sestertius of Vespasian, an interesting hybrid aureus of Lucius Verus, a well preserved denarius of Pescennius Niger, a nice denarius of Macrinus, a selection of follis from the Rauceby Hoard, found in Lincolnshire, July 2017 (submitted for consideration as Treasure and returned to the finders. PAS ID: LIN-F6D516. BM Ref: 2017 T649), a rare follis of Maxentius, even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles.

Very remarkable in this part are a well struck aureus of Nero, an aureo of Trajan, a sestertius of Hadrian work of the Alphaeus master and a beautiful and well preserved denarius of Diva Paulina.

The Byzantine part includes a very interesting selection of specimens, nevertheless the Medieval and Modern part of sale includes an extremely rare tarì of Amalfi.
