Numismatic Fine Art presents their first auction in November 2024. The offer contains an exquisite selection of 370 wonderful treasures, including pieces from almost all periods of history. The sale will close on 22nd November 2024 online.

These coins are exceptional in terms of their quality, their rarity or their great artistic style, some of the coins also have a remarkable provenance. This is a unique opportunity to acquire exceptional masterpieces and rarities.

Lot 11: Greek coins, Sicily, Leontinoi. AR-Tetradrachm. Struck circa 430-425 BC. A magnificent specimen of excellent classical style in a superb condition. Estimate: 4,000 CHF.

Greek Coins

The selection of Greek coins (lots 1-24) includes some outstandingly preserved cabinet pieces and great rarities. Particularly noteworthy is the outstanding tetradrachm of the Carthaginians in Sicily (lot 8), the exceptionally well-preserved tetradrachm of Leontinoi (lot 11), the gold stater of Macedonia in the finest style (lot 17).

A 16-litrae from Philistis (lot 15) and a Nomos from Kroton (lot 7) will also be on sale at the upcoming auction. Both are high-quality specimens with wonderful toning and are also rare variants. Finally, there is the Litra of Syracuse (lot 12), which is one of the best-preserved examples of this great rarity.

Roman Provincial Coinage

Here you will find some selected specimens with outstanding portraits (especially lots 27, 30 and 31).

Lot 46: The Roman Republic, C. Valerius C.F. Flaccus. AR-Denarius. Struck 140 BC. A spectacular example. Sharply struck with an attractive iridescent tone and lustrous fields. Estimate: 1,500 CHF.

Roman Republic

The Roman Republic is one of the best represented parts of the auction. There are also some beautiful cabinet pieces here, which are rarely found in this quality.

The selection begins with three attractive examples of the early drachm and didrachm coinage. In addition, there is a very beautiful and extremely rare denarius of the Marsic Confederation during the Social War (lot 78). An especially beautiful example of Faustus Sulla, showing the submission of Jugurtha on the reverse (lot 115). An outstanding denarius of C. Memmius, which was exhibited at the Cincinnati Art Museum for more than a decade (1994-2008) (lot 118). In addition, two magnificent denarii of the Caesar murderer Brutus (lots 124 & 125). The latter with an outstanding provenance dating back to 1933 and including the famous Niggeler and Haeberlin collections.

A denarius with an attractive portrait of Sulla (lot 127). A beautiful piece struck by Hostilius Saserna, possibly portraying Vercingetorix (lot 133). Towards the end we also find an attractive denarius of Caesar with a magnificent portrait (lot 142).

Octavianus Augustus

At the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Imperial period, we find a special selection of attractive denarii of Augustus (lots 147 to 178). There are some great pieces and rarities here too. For example, a denarius with the earliest portrait of Octavian (lot 147). There are also some pieces with rare left portraits in very good condition (e.g. lots 162 and 170).

Roman Imperial Period

The Roman Imperial period includes a whole series of pieces with outstanding portraits.

These include an excellent example of a Plotina (lot 195) and two very attractive aurei (lots 186 and 213). The selection is rounded off with some beautiful gold solidi.

Coins of the Middle Ages and Modern Times

The auction continues with 11 very attractive gold coins of the Byzantine Empire (lots 270 to 280). These are followed by a selection of attractive and in some cases very rare talers. Two rare examples of the Counts Schlick (lots 282 and 283). A beautiful example of the Patronatstaler (lot 303), two very rare thalers of Hesse-Kassel (lots 306 & 307). Three outstanding and rare thalers from Transylvania (lots 363 to 365).

The auction concludes with a series of six Olympic medals in excellent condition (lots 366 to 371).
