Over 20 Years of Experience

Founded in 2001, Numisart is an auction house with international experience, a deep devotion to antiquity, and a strong academic background. Over many years the gallery was located at Maximiliansplatz in the hearth of Munich, exhibiting at renown art fairs in Munich, Salzburg and Palm Beach. Today, the small team of committed experts is based in Vienna, the birthplace of numismatics, holding regular auctions.

Lot 6: Roman gladiator brooch depicting a Thraex. Ca. 2nd–3rd century AD. Starting price: 550 EUR

A Rare Gladiator Brooch

This brooch depicts a Thraex (‘Thracian’), equipped with a helmet and greaves. He holds a rectangular shield and a short, curved sword (sica). This fascinating and rare piece dates to the 2nd–3rd century AD. Perhaps it was worn by a fan of gladiator games?

A Kitchen Slave

This statuette, 8.6 cm high, depicts a comic actor in the role of a kitchen slave. This is evident from his raised arms, that originally carried serving dishes. He wears the typical grotesque mask and a short cloak, under which a prominent phallus is visible. The cloak is padded to suggest a large belly. This statuette is a rare example of Greek art.

Lot 15: Pair of elaborate Roman gold earrings. Ca. 2nd–3rd century AD. Estimate: 1,500 EUR.

Fine Roman Gold Jewellery

These gold earrings, weighing over 15 g, each consist of two discs that are richly decorated with filigree and granulation work. They demonstrate elaborate craftsmanship and once adorned the face of a wealthy Roman woman in the 2nd–3rd century AD.

Lot 4: Byzantine gilded bronze pendant depicting an archangel. Ca. 11th–13th century AD. Estimate: 380 EUR.

A Byzantine Depiction of an Archangel

This pendant, made of gilded bronze, is a prime example of Byzantine art. Christian motifs were ubiquitous during this period. The openwork pendant takes the shape of an angel with long wings in relief. It is richly decorated with punchwork. In his right hand, he holds a sceptre; in his left, a globus cruciger (cross-bearing orb).
