Auction 4 of the Numismatische Antiquariat Lang will offer 990 lots of numismatic literature on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024.
The auction begins with the D.F. Grotjohann library, lots 1 – 136, which focuses on ancient numismatics. Among the lots are numerous sought-after standard works, including Calico, X.: The Roman Aurei, Thompson, M.: The New Style Silver Coinage of Athens and Zacos, G. / Veglery, A. Byzantine Lead Seals. The library concludes with medieval and modern times and auction catalogues.
The second part of the auction (lots 200 – 1053) offers a broad spectrum of numismatic literature and also includes books on British numismatics from the Reinhold Jordan library. The auction starts with 100 lots of bibliophile works, including some beautifully bound works and rarities. Lot 286 is an example of this. The works by Tentzel (Saxonia Numismatica) bound in full vellum, both the Albertine and Ernestine parts, come from the library of Adolph Hess and also include the extremely rare supplementary plates.
The general works are followed by the literature on ancient numismatics. Here too, in addition to many standard works, one finds sought-after works in fine condition. With almost 430 lots, the Middle Ages and modern times are most strongly represented. German and British numismatics are very common here. Among them are also some works on medalology, including Habich, G: Die deutschen Schaumünzen des XVI. Jahrhunderts im Original. Finally, there are commemorative publications, periodicals and auction catalogs. Among the journals there are some almost complete series, including the Numismatische Zeitschrift Wien, the Jahrbuch für Numismatik und Geldgeschichte, Archiv für Medaillen- und Plaketten-Kunde, Deutsche Münzblätter, Hamburger Beiträge zur Numismatik, Journal international d’archéologie numismatique (JIAN), Athens. The auction catalogues contain sought-after collections such as the Apostolo Zeno collection, Knigge, Brand collection, Zschiesche and Köder, Wellenheim, Vogel, Prowe. Particularly noteworthy is the Collection de M. le Vicomte de Ponton d’Amécourt. Monnaies d’or Romaines et Byzantines, which is particularly splendidly bound in half leather.
