In Cyzicus, Kore, the goddess of fertility, was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld (Propertius III. 22: 4). Later, Zeus is said to have given the city to her as dowry. The epithet Soteira may derive from the believe that Kore defended the city against the giants who wanted to dry up the nearby river Rhyndacus (Steph. of Byz. under Besbikos). The lion’s head refers to Apollo, the main god of Miletus, the mother town of Cyzicus. Moreover, the oracle of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi had recognized the cult of Kore Soteira in Cyzicus as being sacred (IG IX 4: 1298). For detailed information: K.
