In the current auction 124, Solidus presents 525 attractive lots with some rarities, including a series of late Roman solidi in top condition and some rare Russian coins. At the end of the auction, interesting coin groups are offered with very moderate estimate prices.
The auction will be held as a live auction on the auction platform AUEX on Tuesday, 19 September 2023 from 16:00. Pre-bids can already be submitted.
The auction begins with East Celtic coins and some interesting imitations of Greek and Roman coinage. This is followed by a selection of Greek coins with a focus on Thrace, the Greek motherland, Asia Minor and the Hellenistic kingdoms, finally selected Roman Provincial Roman coins. This is followed by some denarii of the Roman Republic. At the interface between the Republic and the Imperial period, the treasure find of Brohl-Lützing from the Augustan period, published in NNB 1/2021, is on offer as a whole (lot 1163). The treasure find contains a total of 18 denarii from the late Republic as well as from the time of Emperor Augustus. The two final coins, minted between 15 – 13 B.C., suggest that the find was concealed during the preparations for Augustus’ Germanic campaigns on the Rhine border. It contains some excellent or almost excellent denarii with attractive motifs (elephants on coins of Caesar and Metellus Scipio) and portraits (including Pompeius Magnus, Octavian and Marcus Antonius).
Following are denarii, sestertii and antoninians of the Roman Imperial period, from which there is also a series of ten excellently preserved late Roman solidi from the Constantinian to the Theodosian dynasties. The highlight is a mint specimen of the Aelia Eudoxia (lot 1229), a very rare coin, especially in this condition. Some Byzantine coins conclude the offer on antiquity.
Among the coins of the Middle Ages, a series of selected Bavarian pennies deserves mention, including an exceptionally rare example of the Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut with a round coat of arms and helmet (lot 1239). Also on offer are medieval pennies from the northern parts of the Holy Roman Empire as well as late medieval coinage from Eastern Europe.
Among the German coins from the period after 1871 is a series of commemorative coins of the Weimar Republic, some in exceptionally good condition, sometimes ex proof items, among others the 5 Mark piece with the portrait of Goethe (lot 1296).
Among the European coins are some Russian rarities (lots 1321 – 1323): A 50 zloty piece from 1819, minted under Alexander I in Warsaw for Poland, a trial strike in copper for the commemorative ruble in 1859 on the unveiling of the equestrian statue for Nicholas I and a silver bar of 3 zolotnik without year (ca. 1885).
The last section of the auction consists of interesting groups of coins with very moderate estimates.
