Leu Numismatik is delighted to reflect on the resounding success of their recent floor auctions, Leu 17 (ancient coins) and Leu 18 (medieval and modern coins and medals), held in Zurich on 31 May and 2 June 2025. For the first time in the company’s history, they conducted a dual floor auction series with separate sales dedicated to ancient coins and to medieval and modern issues – a major milestone in the continued evolution of our firm.

Despite a challenging market environment, marked by uncertainties in international trade and ongoing discussions around U.S. tariff policy, the team at Leu Numismatik was pleased to see exceptionally strong participation and results:

  • Leu 17 achieved a remarkable total of 2,521,502 CHF against an estimate of 1,591,200 CHF
  • Leu 18 followed with 851,111 CHF, far exceeding its estimate of 469,700 CHF

Altogether, the two auctions realised a combined hammer price of 3,372,613 CHF on behalf of the consignors – a powerful testament to the enduring global interest in outstanding numismatics, regardless of era or category.

Here are a few particularly noteworthy results:

  • Lot 71, a Tetradrachm from Syracuse with distinguished provenance, nearly quadrupled its estimate of 7,500 CHF, selling for 32,000 CHF

  • Lot 123, a magnificent Distater of Alexander the Great, brought 80,000 CHF (estimate: 50,000 CHF)

  • Lot 389, an exceptional Denarius of Quintus Labienus Parthicus, realised 150,000 CHF (estimate: 75,000 CHF)
  • Among Roman imperial coins, lot 467, a Medallion of Gordian III, attracted attention with a hammer price of 50’000 CHF (estimate: 15,000 CHF)

  • In the modern section, lot 1216, a previously unknown Medio Maravedi of Sancho IV, stood out at 42,000 CHF (estimate: 25,000 CHF)
  • Lot 1286, a U.S. Dollar from 1799, more than doubled its estimate of 15,000 CHF, selling for 34,000 CHF

Looking Ahead

Following these auctions, we now turn to the future: Leu warmly invites you to consign coins for their upcoming autumn floor auctions, Leu 19 (ancient coins) and Leu 20 (medieval & modern coins and medals). The consignment deadline is 18 August 2025.

The team of Leu also announces that from 5 to 9 July 2025, they will hold Web Auctions 34 & 35, their first-ever online sales separated by historical period. Web Auction 34 will focus exclusively on ancient coins, while Web Auction 35 will showcase medieval and modern issues.  The online catalogue will be available in mid-June.
