Naville Numismatics Live Auction 82

Naville Numismatics presents its Live Auction 82. The auction will close on Sunday 18th June 2023, 16.00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin. Absentee bidders can bid electronically through Naville Numismatics website from the day the sale is published online up to the start of the live session. The auction features a selection of 806 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

Lot 229: The Ptolemies. Ptolemy II Philadelphos (285 – 246). Octodrachm, circa 251-250 BC, Alexandria. In name of Arsinoe. A very attractive portrait struck in high relief, minor marks and minor tooling on hair, otherwise About Extremely fine. Starting Price: £3,500.

The sale includes a selection of coins from the collection of a Mentor. This first section of the sale starts with an interesting selection of silver and bronzes of Etruria, Magna Grecia and Sicily, such as a beautiful 20 asses of Populonia, a rare bronze of Cosa, a rare bronze of an uncertain mint in Etruria, a rare bronze of Azentium, a nice quadrunx of Luceria, an extremely rare biunx of an uncertain mint in Apulia, an uncia of the highest rarity of an uncertain mint in Apulia, a very nice semuncia of Venusia, a nice nomos of Tarentum (Ex Naville 75, 17), a rare drachm of the Brettii, a rare tetradrchm of Selinus, a rare drachm of Tauromenium (Ex Naville 75, 71), a nice tetradrachm of Lysimachus, a rare drachm of Cnidus and a nice Zuz of Bar Kokhba revolt (ex New York sale XLII, 2018, 313). Moreover in this part, a selection of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Tarentum, Metapontum, Croton, Syracuse, Athens, Corinth, Seleucid kings, Phoenicia and Egypt. Noteworthy in this section is a very nice unsigned tetras of Exakestidas of Syracuse and a nice octodrachm of Arsinoe.

Lot 458: Roman Republic. Q. Servilius Caepio (M. Junius) Brutus. Denarius, 54 BC, Rome mint. Lightly toned, faint hairlines, otherwise Good Very fine. Starting Price: £150.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii. This includes a well preserved sextans, a nice denarius of Q. Marcius Libo, a well preserved denarius of M. Porcius Laeca, a rare denarius of L. Cornelius Sulla Imperator with L. Manlius Torquatus Proquaestor, a well preserved denarius of L. Papius, a well preserved denarius of Q. Servilius Caepio (M. Junius) Brutus and a scarce denarius of Lollius Palicanus.

Lot 600: Roman Imperial. Septimius Severus (193-211). Denarius, circa 202-210, Rome mint. Extremely rare and Good Very fine. Starting Price: £250.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman bronzes and silver coins such as a rare denarius of Gaius, an aureus of Nero, a rare sestertius of Domitian, a rare aureus of Nerva, a selection of denarii of Trajan and Hadrian, a nice sestertius of Marcus Aurelius, a very rare of denarius of Septimius Severus, a well preserved denarius of Macrinus (ex NAC Spring sale 2021, 1408), a rare antoninianus of Laelianus, a selection of follis from the Rauceby Hoard, found in Lincolnshire, July 2017 (submitted for consideration as Treasure and returned to the finders. PAS ID: LIN-F6D516. BM Ref: 2017 T649), even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles. Very remarkable in this part are a rare quinarius of Tiberius, an extremely rare contorniate of late IV century AD with Nero and Jason, a rare aureus of Septimius Severus and a rare sestertius of Orbiana (ex NAC Q, 2006, 1973 and NAC 78, 2014, 2355 sales). The Medieval and Modern part of sale includes an interesting selection of Indo-Greek and Indian coins.

Lot 380: Egypt, Alexandria. Antoninus Pius (138-161). Drachm, circa 159-160 (year 23). An apparently unique variant with horse without bridle. From the Dattari collection. Lovely brown tone and About Extremely Fine/Extremely Fine. Starting Price: £1,200.
