The American Numismatic Society (ANS), one of the United States’ leading scholarly organization and museum dedicated to coins, currency, and economic history, is pleased to announce the 69th Eric P. Newman Graduate Summer Seminar in Numismatics. It will take place from June 2 to July 25, 2025.

The Eric P. Newman Graduate Summer Seminar is one of the most renown numismatic summer seminars

Since 1952, this esteemed program has advanced the study of numismatics, fostering academic careers and producing influential scholarship. Many alumni of this prestigious seminar have gone on to make significant contributions to academic and numismatic fields.

Each year, a renowned scholar in the field of History, Art History, Classics, or Numismatics serves as the Eric P. Newman Visiting scholar, further enriching the scientific offer of the Summer Seminar. The 2025 Visiting Scholar will be Professor John Ma (Columbia University, New York).

About the Seminar

This intensive eight-week program provides participants with:

  • Lectures and workshops on numismatic methods, theories, and history by ANS staff and distinguished guest scholars
  • Direct access to the ANS’s world-renowned collections
  • A chance to complete a research paper on a chosen numismatic topic, guided by the expert mentorship of the resident Curators and of the Visiting Scholar

Eligibility

The seminar is primarily designed for:

  • Doctoral candidates in fields such as History, Art History, Archaeology, Textual Studies, and Digital Humanities
  • Master’s students with strong academic credentials may also be considered
  • U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students studying at U.S. institutions with eligible visas
  • Prior experience in numismatics is not required.

Important Dates

  • November 22, 2024: Applications open
  • March 3, 2025: Deadline for application submission, letters of recommendation, and supporting documents
  • April 15, 2025: Candidates will be notified of their application status

Funding

A limited number of stipends of up to $4,000 are available to assist with living and travel expenses.

To apply, complete the application form, and request three evaluations. Applicants should direct their evaluators to the evaluation form, the ANS will not contact them independently.
