Post-Doc Position at the Department of Numismatics and Monetary History in Vienna
The Department of Numismatics and Monetary History at the University of Vienna is looking for a Scientific Project Assistant Post-Doc starting at 05/01/2025 with a workload of 40,00 hours and a classification of CBA: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc). The contract is limited until 08/31/2026.
The Department of Numismatics and Monetary History at the University of Vienna is the only university department in Europe focusing on money and its history. It is a unique place for the academic study of numismatics from antiquity to the modern period, covering the full methodological spectrum of the subject.
You work full-time as a post-doc in the research project “Ordering the World in Coins. The networks of Frölich, Khell, and Eckhel and their classification systems for ancient coins” (FWF project no. P34086, Principal Investigator: Bernhard Woytek). The main aim of this project is the publication of a critical edition with a commentary of the scholarly letters of the Enlightenment numismatists Erasmus Frölich (1700-1758) and Joseph Khell (1714-1772), in a hybrid edition (both print and online).
What you do exactly:
- You collaborate with the project leader and two project associates (one post-doc and one doctorand) in preparing the edition of the correspondence and a numismatic and historical commentary on the letters.
- You publish and lecture internationally on the history of ancient numismatics.
- You contribute to the administration of the research project and the department.
Your competences:
- Outstanding PhD in numismatics and monetary history or in a related discipline (ancient history, early modern history, art history or the like)
- Excellent publications in the field of ancient numismatics and monetary history
- Interest in the history of classical studies (and ideally research experience in this field)
- Ability to work in a team and organisational skills
- Broad subject-specific IT user skills
- Languages: English (project language); German, French, Italian (at least passive knowledge); Latin (at least basic knowledge)
