CIT’s Yin and Yang

With Yin and Yang, CIT presents a completely new interpretation of a time-honored theme. The two opposites, which are often referred to in Taoism as ‘the supreme ultimate’, are represented here as day and night, with a wealth of Chinese concepts hidden within the lush, almost baroque-style scenery.

Description of the Coin

One side is inspired by the Chinese symbol tàijì, which is better known as Yin and Yang in the West. On the coin, the “white” part corresponds to a Chinese river landscape by day with a dark heavenly body; the “dark” area is reminiscent of a cloudy night sky with a bright heavenly body. On the rim 2024.

The other side depicts the coat of arms of Palau in Black Proof, above REPUBLIC OF PALAU, below 5 $.

Palau. 5 Dollars 2024. Silver .9999. 1 oz. 38.61 mm. Proof / Black Proof. Mintage figure: 999 pieces.

Background

The river landscape, with a small boat being poled through it, is reminiscent of the hills of Guilin crossed by the Li River. These motifs are among the classic landscapes of ancient China and have been immortalized in countless scroll paintings. Today, they are a popular tourist destination. But there is more to the hills than meets the eye: originally, the characters Yin and Yang denoted the side of a hill facing the sun (Yang) and the opposite side not touched by the sun (Yin). At the top of the hill, both sides unite to form ‘the supreme ultimate’.

The night side of the coin also contains a hidden clue. The stars are arranged like the constellations of the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper, which make it easy to identify the North Star. And according to Chinese tradition, this very North Star is considered the pivotal point of the heavens, that is to say, the tàijí, or Yin and Yang.
