Campana, Alberto (b. 1947)

by Hadrien Rambach

Born in Sardinia but raised in Rome, Alberto Campana is a biologist by profession, working as a toxicologist researcher for a large Italian pharmaceutical company (Aziende Chimiche Riunite Angelini Francesco s.p.a.), now in pension, but numismatics has always been his passion, publishing in 1987 a reference book on the coinage of the civil war (91-87 BC). Then, under the title Corpus Nummorum Antiquae Italiae, he devoted from 1992 to 2003 a series of articles to the so-called “minor mints” in the journal Panorama Numismatico. He also wrote many other articles for the same publication, notably a series on the gold coins of the Roman Republic. He disposed of part of his collection with Numismatica Ars Classica’s auction 64 (17-18 May 2012) and in their two following auctions (anonymously).

A part Campanas collection was auctioned by NAC in their auction 64 in 2012.

His interest has been devoted to the countermarks apposed on Sicilian Greek coins and to the Roman Republic coinage, with many articles in the journal Monete Antiche. He has published books on La monetazione degli insorti italici durante la Guerra Sociale (91-87 a.C.) (Soliera 1987), T. Quinctius Flamininus. Un aureo ellenistico (RRC548/1) (Cassino, 2196), on Cn. Domitius Calvinus. Un denario di Osca (RRC 532/1) (Cassino, 2017), on Q. Cornuficius. Aurei e denari in Africa Vetus (RRC 509/1-5) (Cassino, 2018), and (with Giovanni Santell) on L’epopea dionigiana – analisi storico-economica, preliminare allo studio della monetazione di Dionisio I, Signore di Siracusa 405 – 367 a.C. (Formia 2006), on I Tesori di Brescello (Cassino, 2014), on L’imperatore Otone. Storia e monete (Cassino 2016), and, finally (with Antonio Morello), on Samos, Zankle e la Samaina. La nave di Policrate tra Samo e Messina (Formia, 2012). Presently is preparing a Corpus on the so-called martial aurei issued during the second Punic war.
